As Update Your Will Week (3rd – 9th March 2025) approaches, we at mlplaw are supporting The Association of Lifetime Lawyers in raising awareness about the importance of keeping your will up to date.
A will is more than just a legal document—it’s your voice, your intentions, and your legacy. However, life moves fast, and an outdated will may no longer reflect your wishes or could even be open to legal challenges.
Why Updating Your Will is Crucial
Your will ensures that your money, property, and possessions are distributed according to your wishes. But when was the last time you reviewed it?
If your will isn’t up to date:
- Your estate may be divided under intestacy rules, which might not align with your preferences or your family’s needs.
- Uncertainty could lead to unnecessary stress and legal disputes among your loved ones.
- Important considerations, such as care for your pets, digital assets, or charitable donations, may be overlooked.
Think of your will as a living document – it should evolve as your life changes.
When Should You Update Your Will?
It’s advisable to review your will every five years or whenever you experience a significant life event, such as:
- Marriage or entering a civil partnership
- Divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership
- Becoming a parent or grandparent
- Buying a property or experiencing financial changes
- Losing a loved one
- Starting a business
- You or a beneficiary obtaining a Gender Recognition Certificate
