GP Practice Structure FAQs

What are the different Business Structures available to my Practice?

You can operate under the models of

  • Sole trader
  • Trust, including a hybrid trust, a unit trust, a discretionary trust or a family trust
  • Company
  • Partnership
  • Associateship and
    Assistantship
  • Employee Ownership Trust (EOT)

What is employee ownership?

Employee ownership is a model of business ownership in which the share capital of the business is either partly or entirely owned by its employees. It is a fast growing form of ownership in the UK and is similar to a management buyout and with the key difference that the ownership would simply sit with the entire group of employees rather than with senior management or a select few.

What should I consider when converting my practice structure?

There are many things to consider before converting your practice.

  • Funding
  • Taxation
  • Administration
  • Number of people within the practice
  • The long-term goal of the practice
